LF Energy Launches Digital Substation Initiative to Modernize Power Grid Infrastructure

LF Energy, a Linux Foundation coalition, launched its Digital Substation Automation Systems (DSAS) initiative for the enhancement of power grid modularity.

LF Energy, a Linux Foundation coalition, launched its Digital Substation Automation Systems (DSAS) initiative for the enhancement of power grid modularity. The initiative was jump-started in an effort to assist the global effort toward carbon neutrality by the year 2050.

The first project on DSAS, Configuration Modules for Power industry Automation Systems (CoMPAS), was also launched in partnership with GE Renewable Energy, Schneider Electric, RTE, Alliander, and other leading organizations.

"As a global society, we are at a turning point in history," said executive director of LF Energy Dr. Shuli Goodman, in a press release. "We either continue down our current path, or we thoroughly examine the processes and infrastructure in place and make real, meaningful changes that address the climate crisis directly.

“Our power grid is notoriously one of the greatest challenges for ending the climate crisis. With our CoMPAS project and other future DSAS projects, LF Energy and our members are proud to lead the charge in making 100% decarbonization a reality as we transform power grid infrastructure."

LF Energy's DSAS initiative seeks to alleviate the challenges of transitioning to clean energy by optimizing electrical substations through open-source technology. The substations connect grid users and grid voltage levels.

Per the company, deploying the open-source technology allows digital substations to be more efficient in changing power supply though expand dynamic protection settings, better data management capabilities, and increased adaptive automation functions.
