Uncrackable SSD encryption from Innodisk leverages TCG Opal 2.0

iOpal software technology enables easy SED management and pairs with hardware-based AES 256 encryption in SED controller to provide ?uncrackable? data protection with zero impact on CPU performance.

Innodisk has integrated software based on the Trusted Computing Group’s (TCG’s) Opal 2.0 storage software specification with its self-encrypting drive (SED) technology. Innodisk’s iOpal software technology enables easy SED management, and pairs with a hardware-based AES 256 encryption engine located in the SED controller to provide “uncrackable” data protection with zero impact on CPU loading, according to the company.

TCG Opal 2.0 is a set of SED management specifications that reduce the processor load and vulnerabilities associated with software-based encryption, and defines how different data ranges can be created for different users of a device so that system data can be shared on a strictly need-to-know basis. iOpal places these definitions into a user-friendly application for data storage management, user authorization, pre-boot authentication, and other functions.

iOpal software is compatible with 3MG2-P (2.5” SSD , M.2 (S42,S80), mSATA, SATA Slim); 3SE2-P (2.5” SSD, 1.8” SSD), and 3MR2-P SSD (2.5” SSD) series form factor SEDs. The internal AES engine on these SKUs encrypts all data received by the device. As a result, data read directly from NAND flash is scrambled and unintelligible.

iOpal is compatible with Windows 7, Windows 10, Ubuntu and Fedora Linux. Interested developers can find out more about the technology at www.innodisk.com/tw/technology/security.
