UTAC Receives Safety-Critical Automotive Quality Accreditation for Three Further Factory Locations

ISO26262 certifications

Singapore, 16. December 2019 - UTAC Holdings Ltd. ("UTAC"), a global semiconductor test and assembly services provider, announced that three further factories have been accredited to the stringent automotive quality standard, ISO26262.

Following the recent announcement of the accreditation of UTAC Thailand (UTL) in Bangkok to ISO26262, the two UTAC factories in Singapore (USG1 & USG2) as well as the factory in Dongguan, China (UDG) have now also received the accreditation.

With the proliferation of semi- and fully-automated vehicles, many safety-critical functions such as steering, braking and object detection will rely more and more on on-board systems. This further increases the already-tough automotive quality requirements. Therefore, getting ISO26262 certification is critical to support ever-increasing quality requirements for automotive products.
Based upon the established industrial safety standard (IEC 61508), ISO26262 provides a safety environment specifically for electrical / electronic systems in vehicles, that stretches through all stages of the design, manufacture and maintenance of vehicles.

The goal of ISO26262 is very simple, to prevent injury or fatalities to any vehicle occupants or other road users. Depending upon the criticality of the system, different levels of automotive safety integrity levels (ASIL) have to be applied. ISO26262 recognizes this through the definition of four levels, each of which define a system as being 'functionally safe' if the system cannot malfunction as a result of random or systemic failures.

In line with the earlier approval of their Bangkok facility, the factories in Singapore and Dongguan will ensure that their safety culture meets the needs of ISO26262, including the adoption of rigidly defined processes and rules.

Quality is of primary importance within UTAC factories, which already accredited to ISO9001 and IATF16949 (for automotive product development). The implementation of ISO26262 enhances the existing accreditations by adding processes that are specific to all safety-critical aspects of automotive design and manufacture.

Speaking further about the ISO26262 certifications, W.John Nelson, President and CEO at UTAC said: "We are very pleased to be rolling out ISO26262 further within our organization as it is important to our customers. This expansion also underlines UTAC's commitment to provide the highest level of quality in all aspects of our business and reassures customers of our position as a leading supplier of safety-critical automotive standards. The accreditation would not have happened without significant work by our talented and knowledgeable employees."
