Las Vegas, 29 November, 2017 - It was announced at Amazon Web Service (AWS) re:Invent, that WITTENSTEIN high integrity systems and AWS have formed a Strategic Business Alliance. WITTENSTEIN high integrity systems will support the newly launched IoT Microcontroller Operating System, Amazon FreeRTOS on Amazon Web Services (AWS) with OPENRTOS and SAFERTOS.

At re:Invent 2017, AWS’s global conference with over 40,000 attendees, Rob Cochran, Senior Product Manager, IoT Services, Amazon Web Services, Inc. and Dr. David Cowling, Managing Director of WITTENSTEIN high integrity systems, announced a strategic business alliance. Also announced today was Amazon FreeRTOS, which provides tools you need to quickly and easily deploy a microcontroller-based connected device and develop an Internet of Things (IoT) application without having to worry about the complexity of scaling across millions of devices. Once connected, IoT device applications can take advantage of all of the capabilities of the cloud or continue processing data locally with AWS Greengrass.

Created by Richard Barry in 2003, the FreeRTOS kernel is a market leading embedded real time operating system. Since 2006, WITTENSTEIN high integrity systems (WHIS) has offered exclusive professional licensing under the brand name OPENRTOS, and an upgrade path to SAFERTOS, WHIS’s own safety critical real-time operating system pre-certified by TÜV SÜD. Richard Barry has joined AWS to lead the engineering of Amazon FreeRTOS and the FreeRTOS kernel.

WITTENSTEIN high integrity systems will continue to support & develop OPENRTOS and offer a migration path from Amazon FreeRTOS to SAFERTOS. WHIS will support AWS IoT device developers with OPENRTOS and SAFERTOS as part of their strategic business alliance with AWS as well as continuing to serve their broad customer base in industry sectors ranging from medical and automotive to aerospace.

“I’ve enjoyed a long-standing collaboration with WITTENSTEIN high integrity systems and am excited to continue that relationship now I am with AWS”, said Richard Barry, FreeRTOS founder and Principal Engineer at AWS. “Having WITTENSTEIN offer licensed OPENRTOS and SAFERTOS provides our customers important commercial options, and helps us expand our AWS IoT offerings to meet the needs of a new class of device developers and manufacturers”

“We have a long and successful history of working with Richard Barry and the FreeRTOS project. The AWS announcement today will allow Amazon FreeRTOS to develop faster, and to focus on innovative IoT, edge of cloud solutions” said Dr. David Cowling, Managing Director of WITTENSTEIN high integrity systems. “As part of our Strategic Business Alliance with AWS, we will continue to provide Amazon FreeRTOS users the option of commercial licensing, and for those developing safety critical systems, the ability to upgrade to SAFERTOS.”
