Synopsys has released the DesignWare USB4 IP solution, a suite of pre-verified controllers, routers, verification IP, and PHYs that supports all features of the USB4 spec, including 40 Gbps data transfer speeds.

The USB4 router IP supports additional high-speed protocols such as DisplayPort with HDCP 2.3 security, PCI Express, and Thunderbolt 3 for simultaneous data and power delivery over a USB Type-C cable. It is also backwards-compatible with USB 3.x and USB 2.0 technology.

The verification IP suite includes the Verdi protocol analyzer for both host and device topologies, protocol checkers, and a source code test suite for tunneled USB, PCI Express and DisplayPort protocols.

The USB4 IP was successfully taped out on a 5 nm FinFET test chip. The IP is highly power efficient and integrates all the aforementioned protocols in roughly one-third the area required by discrete PHYs, according to Synopsys.

Commercial USB4 products are expected in late 2020.

DesignWare USB4 IP is currently available to lead customers. For more information, visit www.synopsys.com/designware-ip/interface-ip/usb/usb4.html.
