Size, weight, and power (SWaP) is widely used as a metric for military vehicle-based equipment. Given that SWaP is generally predetermined, the request we hear often is, “How can you boost my performance dramatically?” Typically we are able to offer incremental increases with each new silicon release, and we’ve been doing this with multiple generations of quad-core Intel Core i7 processor-based boards. That’s good, especially for those customers using the built-in GPU processing capability.
A new line of Intel Xeon D-1500 processors is stepping up, ready to be unveiled at Embedded World 2016. These are introduced with up to eight cores and offer the promise of 12-core variants suitable for use on rugged boards launching this quarter. Within the same SWaP envelope, Concurrent Technologies’ TR C4x/msd board provides double the number of CPU cores plus Xeon-class features like virtualization and cache allocation technology.
