Ease of Use, Ethernet help National Instruments address the range of IIoT applications

Kyle Voosen, Senior Business Segment Manager for Physical Test Systems and Industrial IoT at National Instruments is responsible for hardware and software tools that support a range of Industrial IoT use cases, from simple sensors and actuators to complex control systems. In tackling this market National Instruments has employed a modular hardware and software strategy that allows domain experts with limited knowledge of embedded programming to extract meaningful data, but over the years diverse requirements have made platforms like LabVIEW notably complex.

At NIWeek 2017 National Instruments got back to basics with a new version of LabVIEW, LabVIEW NXG, that returns to the notions of automation and ease of use in a configuration-based software offering. Furthermore, the company released a pair of time-sensitive networking-enabled (TSN-enabled) CompactDAQ chassis that will help bridge the IT/OT networking gap. Here, Voosen explains to Embedded Computing Design's Brandon Lewis how these technologies are being delivered to, and stand to benefit, IIoT scientists, engineers, and innovators.
